is it just me?

I woke up with a headache. It was mostly sinus, with just a hint of stress. But what it wasn’t was a migraine. And I’ll take a sinus/stress headache over a migraine any ol’ day of the week.

I think I’ve had only one or two migraines in the past year, which is freakin’ amazing considering I used to get three or four a month…and those could last three or four days each. But then something happened: I cut animal products out of my diet and the migraines slowly crept out of Dodge.

I searched online for other references to “vegan” and “migraine” and didn’t find much. I know that when I was seeing doctors for my migraines (to get my arsenal of meds), they cited triggers such as coffee, wine, and cheese. I still drink coffee and I’ve never been too big on wine or cheese.

Since migraines are the source of gazillions of dollars for the pharmaceutical industry, don’t expect any study to pinpoint a cause or cure anytime soon. We’re on our own to figure out what works for us: Is it a magnesium deficiency? Are we allergic to something we’re eating? Do we need to threaten to sue our workplace to get rid of those horrible fluorescent lights? Or do we just live with it?

I don’t eat ice cream anymore. I don’t eat shrimp. I don’t eat croissants. And I don’t lie in bed for days with a pillow over my head, trying to find a position that will make me not want to vomit. That’s what works for me.

Anyone else?

  1. I woke up yesterday morning with a bit of a headache myself. I find that it is usually related to dehydration. I drank tons of water and OJ and just rode it out and it finally went away. I stopped drinking over a year ago because it was making me super sick…

  2. Have you ever considered acupuncture for your headaches? I have helped a lot of patients become migraine-free without the side effects of medication. Acupuncture is also great for tension and cluster headaches. You should look for a good acupuncturist in your area.

  3. I’m not worried about the occasional headache. That’s part of life. I’m amazed at how my chronic migraines have disappeared since cutting out animal products. This was a celebratory post, not a sad-bastard one.
