As you may know, I’ve never been a fan of meat, so meaty meat substitutes are not my go-to guys for protein. I’ve become pretty good friends with tempeh and tofu, but seitan is still a tough one for me.
So it was with a dare to myself that I picked up a Field Roast Celebration Roast. I mean, look at it. It’s got a skin on it and everything. And it’s stuffed with what looks like a very mushy stuffing (food consistency being another food issue of mine). But I did it.
We ate it cold, but there are heating instructions on the label. Hot just seemed a little too creepy—maybe next time. I know when I made a Tofurky a year or two ago, I hated it hot but it was great cold.
So how’d it go? The spices reminded me of Slim Jims, those horrible jerkey-type dog treats for people I used to love. The grain meat was doable, much like the Tofurky, and the stuffing was surprisingly solid. Tom ate it even though it had mushrooms in it. Thumbs up. And one serving has 30 grams of protein. More thumbs up.
I don’t know if I could do their sausage-style offerings, but who knows, I’m surprising myself a lot lately.
