sharing mofo: food bank time!

People are hungry. Tell you something you don’t know, right? Seriously, not that all this food wouldn’t be eaten by omnivores, but I try to donate vegan food whenever my apartment building has a drive (which is more often than you’d think). Seeing all that mac-n-cheese and salty soups in the box pisses me off. On a trip to Trader Joe’s, where I was going anyway, I filled a basket for me and one for the food bank.

For $18.80 I got a pound of oats, a pound of peanuts, a pound of sunflower seeds, a pound of peanut butter, two pounds of pasta, three pounds of brown rice, applesauce, marinara, and soymilk—much of it organic.

So I don’t order a pizza this week. I got to make someone’s day a little easier, maybe. With food!

  1. remember that mac n cheese was donated out of the goodness of someone’s heart too, and i guarantee you someone will be verry happy to get that also.
    love you!

  2. As someone who has had to rely on the handouts from our city’s food-bank more than once, I LOVE your post – It seems foodbanks get a few bulk commodities (white rice, beans, cornmeal, oats) and then they get all the weird sh*t that people donate because they don’t want it… (instant pineapple oatmeal, pepperoni flavored chips, sweet potato pie mix-in-a-box).

I usually had pretty slim pickings from their offerings and felt bad that they probably thought “beggars can’t be choosers” when I turned down half of the items due to their not being vegetarian. (Yes, I compromised a bit when things were that tight because I wanted my kids to have SOMETHING to eat! )

I think any healthy, nutritious, nourishing food (rather than shrimp top ramen) is going to go a long ways in making someone’s meal – and day – a whole lot better!!
